An impatient Drake fan has been threatened with legal action.
Earlier this week, the rapper’s new track, reportedly titled “Showin Off,” was prematurely posted on SoundCloud and has since been heard by countless individuals. Capital Xtra points out that Drake’s record label Universal Music Group has issued a cease-and-desist letter to the person responsible for the leak; however, that hasn’t stopped others from making duplicates of the record or sharing its details online.
Some fans got their first taste of the track earlier this month, when Lauryn Hill’s son Joshua Omaru Marley shared a snippet via Snapchat. The post was captioned: “Drake x Mom. Nobody has this but me.
As you can hear in the clip, “Showin Off” samples Hill’s 1998 hit “Ex Factor.” Though Drake and Hill have not had an official collaboration, the Toronto rapper previously sampled Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing” in his 2014 track “Draft Day.”
“With your phone out, gotta hit them angles / With your phone out snapping like you
Fabo,” Drizzy raps in the track. “And you're showing off, but it's alright / And you're showing off, but it's alright / It's a short life.”
Though “Showin Off” has not been confirmed as an upcoming single, Drake did tease a new release earlier this week on social media. The rapper’s longtime affiliate Nessel “Chubbs” Beezer celebrated the success of “God’s Plan” via Instagram on Tuesday, which prompted Drake to hit up the comment section with, “Next one soon splash.”
Anticipation for Drake's upcoming album has increased within the last several months, following the release of “Diplomatic Immunity” and the chart-topping single “God’s Plan.”
Earlier this month, Drake spoke about the project during “Drake Night” at the Toronto Raptors game against the Houston Rockets. He told the crowd: “I'm happy to be home, I'm working on this new album for the city
