Spirit Awards: Salma Hayek Takes Shot at Trump's 'S—hole Countries' Comment

While presenting the nominations for best international film, the actress took a jab at the president for his recent comments referring to El Salvador, Haiti and all African countries as "shithole" countries.
Prior to presenting, Hayek declared: "This award has never gone to a shithole nation, because there are no shithole nations!"
Earlier this year, Trump received backlash after sources alleged that during an Oval Office meeting with lawmakers about a proposed bipartisan deal on immigration, the president expressed frustration and questioned why the United States would want to admit more people from "shithole countries.
When asked about the president's remarks, White House spokesman Raj Shah defended Trump but did not directly deny his remarks.
"Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people," Shah said.
The Independent Spirit Awards are airing live on IFC from Santa Barbara with Nick Kroll and David Mulaney returning as hosts.
